"Ibiza" is an island off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean. The images, music, architecture and people are reflected in the concentric rings of the design. While each fabric pattern is unique and beautiful, combined they create a harmonious medallion of color and flare. Amy Butler is the fabric line and I love the background which reminds me of a vintage brocade that would be found on the walls of an elegant bedroom in an old estate.

As you begin this quilt you will find it helpful to make a design wall to check the placement of your 5x5 squares before sewing. Do this by pinning a large piece of felt or other fuzzy type of fabric to a wall or hang from a curtain rod with rings that have clips.
Fabric A is the orange center. Each letter progresses as each outer ring fabric changes from center to right. A orange 11 inches. B gray print 1/4 yard. C turquoise 3/8 yard. D zig zag 3/8 yard. E gray large print 5/8 yard. F light orange 7/8 yard. G background print 1 1/4 yards.
1. With fabric A cut 1 - 10” square. With fabric B iron on "heat and bond" and cut 1 - 8” circle. Peel off backing and iron on circle in the middle of the
square. Sew decorative stitch
around raw edges of circle. Credit to Jenny Doan from the Missouri Star Quilt Company for coming up with this easy way to create "The Drunkards Path". See her youtube tutorials for excellent directions. I came up with the pattern variation directions and use of multiple fabric choices. I also found a new way to do the background in one panel instead of squares.
This is the main component of each progressing square in the medallion. Each “set” of circle and square will be ironed on and sewn in this way. Cut finished circle into ¼’s. Place the 4 patch in the configuration shown below.

2. With fabric B cut 2 - 8” circles
and fabric C 2 - 10”
squares. Finish as directed
above. Cut into ¼’s. Place as shown around original square .
3. Make 3 sets of circle and square
configurations with fabric C 10”
squares and fabric D -
8” circles. Place on design wall to create new ring.
4. Make 4 sets of fabric D as the circle
and E as the square. Add to the design wall and create a new ring.
5. Make 5 sets of fabric E as the circle
and fabric F as the square. Add to design wall.
6. Make 6 sets of fabric F as the circle
and fabric G as the square. Add to design wall.
Cut
enough 5x5 squares of the background fabric to finish your Ibiza medallion. After placing each square on your
design wall check that all squares form the complete Ibiza pattern. Sew from the middle outward.
I chose to figure out a way to keep the background in one piece. I did this by making 4 large triangles cut on a 45 degree angle. Sew one triangle right side facing the main medallion. Make a curve to match each square point as you sew. Turn over and sew down the curved bulge making a scallop to accentuate the curves of your last outside ring of the medallion.

Finish the quilt by laying the backing side facing down, then batting, then quilt top last
layer. Pin and quilt along outside
of each progressing decorative edge where fabric changes.
